Well, it is a little late, but I wanted to post about my first baseball game of the year.
My father and I attended opening day at PK Park in Eugene, OR. on February 27, 2009. The University of Oregon baseball team was having it's first home game in 28 years after the program was recently reinstated.
PK Park currently has temporary seating and very few amenties. However, the playing surface is very unique in the fact that it has no dirt or grass whatsoever. With the exception of a clay mound, the playing surface is all NexTurf, similar to a football field. What is supposed to be the infield dirt is simply brown-colored turf. While purists, like myself may find this objectionable, it does add a whole new aspect to the game. I can tell that it is going to be a very sterile venue with regards to the view, quirks, and amenities. It is a shame that the Em's are going to move here, thus vacate Civic Stadium :(
To celebrate the return of Oregon baseball, the park is offering special deals on programs, concessions and parking. All of it is $2.
The first game was a classic, yet rare for college baseball, pitcher's duel. Andrew Schmidt of Oregon hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth with Eddy Rodriguez on third to give the Ducks a 1-0 victory over the defending NCAA national champion Fresno State Bulldogs.
