Can anyone think of a better way to spend Mother's Day than with your mom at the ballgame? This sure was the best of both worlds today when my family and I went up to Portland to see the Beavers take on the Bees of Salt Lake City. With cloudy skies and temperatures in the seventies, it made for a very pleasant day.
The Beavers continued their unique promotional items by giving the first 500 mothers in attendance roses. This was a very nice gesture and my mom certainly enjoyed it. She was so protective of her flower all day and was committed to "go home, cut the stem, and put it in a glass of water." I'll tell you what, any promotional item that warrants that type of possessiveness was worthwhile.
Turning our eyes to the baseball world, this game was a classic. 2007 All-Star and perennial Cy Young award winner John Lackey took the mound for the Bees. When I saw him slated to make this rehab start, I rushed down to the Bees dugout to seek an autograph from the Major Leaguer. To my surprise, when Lackey appeared from the clubhouse, he ignored me and about four other fans who were seeking autographs from him as well. We yelled at him, but he didn't even acknowledge us. I guess when you're paid the salary that he is, you can smite the average fan who does not see that type of talent every day. It just makes me wonder why we're paying these guys so much money if they treat us fans like this. But that is a discussion for another day.
Either way, Lackey got roughed up considerably. The Beavers opened up for two runs in the bottom of the second to chase Lackey. They then relied on some stellar pitching from Walter Silva and a corps of relievers to preserve a 3-2 victory.
Now I must wait two weeks for the first extended Baseball Roadtrip of the year to Tacoma and Portland. Before I leave, though, I will be attending my final Oregon baseball game of 2009 at PK Park. I will update the blog to reflect all three of those games accordingly.
Always take on a 3-0 pitch ;)
